Thanks to Hurricane Irene, NYC’s Reservoirs are now at 101%
30 August 2011 | By Nick in Misc, tvI’m a weather geek, but not to the point of having the Weather Channel keyed in as a favorite on my cable box. Yes, I did have it on Sunday morning as Hurricane Irene was above us here in NY, but hadn’t tuned into it before then since…, well I can’t remember when?
One of my geeky obsession, is to occasionally check the NYC DEP website that reports on NYC’s water levels and usage. The site updates it’s reservoir totals individually and in aggregate each weekday. Today’s update was the first update since Hurricane Irene soaked New York.
Our rainfall total for August 2011 stands at over ten inches now. That’s 1/2 a foot more H2O than the norm for August of four inches. 101% puts us at about twenty percent more than where we typically find ourselves this time of year.
So we’re probably safe from drought for the next six months or so, BUT we haven’t had a drought in our area in a while—we’re due. I wonder what we’ll see in 2012.
